Lamanai and The New River Safari This is one of Belize's most interesting tours. After a scenic one hour drive up the Northern Highway, board a riverboat at Tower Hill and head up the New River. While traversing the many little creeks and lagoons, it is easy to encounter hawks, kirtes and falcons. You may also see dainty Jacanas lightly walking on the lily pads while the crocodile bask in the morning sunlight. At the entrance to the New River Lagoon, the ruins of Lamanai, Maya for "Submerged Crocodile", rise into view. While touring this ancient Maya site, huge masks depicting rulers from this bygone age and gods seem to materialize out of the rainforest amid the chatter of birdlife and the haunting call of the Howler Monkeys. Your guide will point out the Copal and Ramon trees, instrumental in the lives of the ancient Maya. Altun Ha and Wildlife River Rafting Day begins with a scenic 45 minute drive en route to the Maya Ruins of Altun Ha, maya for "Rock Stone Water", where the famous Jade Head of "Kinich Ahau" was uncovered by Dr. David Pendergast of the Royal Ontario Museum. Altun Ha was once a major trading center linking the Maya on the Caribbean with the Maya of the Central American mainland. After enjoying a delicious local lunch, board a river raft fror wildlife viewing. As you float downstream along the Olde Belize River, the guide will point out the prolific birdlife, flora and fauna. Crocodile rest on the riverbank and Howler Monkeys in the trees. The occasional Manatee and dolphin may also be spotted. The Olde Belize River, once the logging and commercial highway for the country, is a contrast of small settlements and remote stretches where the sense of discovery still looms large. Xunantunich and The Belize Zoo Your adventure begins with a drive to the Belize Zoo, originally created as a sanctuary for the country's indigenous species and now home to an impressive array of large cats, primates, reptiles and birds. A visit to the zoo gives you the opportunity to see Belize's amazing wildlife in one location. The adventure continues with a scenic drive up the Western Highway to the Cayo District and the impressive Maya site of Xunantunich. Before reaching the entrance to this ancient city, cross the Mopan River in a 19th century ferry. Towering in height is "El Castillo", the largest temple in Xunantunich affording fantastic panoramic vistas of the rainforest and nearby villages bordering between Belize and Guatemala as you climb to the top. Robinson Crusoe's Jungle Adventure and Rainforest ATV What would Robinson Crusoe do if he suddenly found himself marooned in the midst of a rainforest? What would you do? Learn the ingenious "Survivor" skills and secrets from instructors who have done such things first hand.! Your experienced jungle guides will teach you how to make fire using only a machete and a piece of bamboo. Learn to identify sources of water and how to actually produce it. Then visit Robinson Crusoe's jungle style dwelling made from all natural materials - vines, branches and the bark of trees! Also featured is rappelling and a Maya cave. Upon arrival to Peccary Park, your experienced guide will brief you on safety procedures for ATV handling, outline the route to be taken and issue protective gear and helmets. It is now time to explore the jungles of Belize on trails laid out over 100 years ago by loggers in search of precious Mahogany trees. Trails are a good mix of various challenging terrains leading to the stop of the day - the Maya Caves. Here you explore caves once used by the Maya thousands of years ago. To the Maya, caves were considered portals to the underworld. These sacred places were used for important ceremonies conducted to appease the gods of the underworld. As you explore the cave, be on the lookout for ancient ceramic pots forgotten for centuries. Who knows? You may be the one to spot an undiscovered find! Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve Bring along your walking shoes, your swimwear and an adveturous mind for a full day of activity. This reserve is chock-full of hills and valleys, rivers and waterfals, swimming holes and caves all surrounded by the majestic beauty of the tropical pine forest. Our three main stops are the Rio Frio Cave, the Rio On Rapids and Pools, and the 1000 ft. Hidden Valley Waterfalls (road conditions permitting). Binoculars are recommended as there is prolific flora and fauna, endemic only to this extremely rugged, but beautiful part of the country. Stop in at one of the lodges in the area for a local lunch and refreshments. Rainforest Medicine Trail and Cahal Pech A scenic drive through small villages along the Western Highway brings you to a one of a kind pharmacy - the Rainforest Medicine Trail. As you walk along well defined trails, your guide will point out plants, roots and herbs once used by the Maya and still used by the Belizeans today for medicinal purposes. Samples from many of these plants and trees have been sent worldwide in search of cures including cancer. After exploring nature's pharmacy, nboard your canoe for a trip down the Mahal Branch of the Belize River. You may see colorful parrots, toucans and iguanas as they hang precariously from the trees along the riverbank. After lunch, begin your return to Belize City with a stop at Cahal Pech Maya ruins boasting the restoration of many masks, stairways and structures found only at this site. Manatee Watch and Barrier Reef Snorkeling Depart Belize City by motorboat for the nearby Manatee breeding grounds. You are almost certain to see these docile, gentle, and protected sea mammals. Goff's Caye is another seven miles to the east and this small island is perched right on Belize's Great barrier Reef, a veritavble picture postcard tropical paradise. Snorkel off the pristine sandy beach with your instructor for that wonderful "Cousteau Experience", or swim in cool waters, or soak up the sun and surf as you relax under a palm tree. A beach picnic lunch and refreshments are served. Snorkel equipment is included.
